Money saving tip-Check your Business Rates

Thursday 12th April 2012 12:21 PM

Most businesses believe that when the annual rates bill arrives the only thing to do is to agree to pay by monthly direct debits, but is your bill correct ?. The calculation for business rates is complex, they take into account floor space and usage but also more unusual things such as open archways. If you are not familiar with how your bill is calculated, why not ask a expert to check it. To avoid a hefty fee, choose a company that offers a no win no fee price. I used a company called Tattersalls, based in Sheffield. They corrected my annual rates and I benefited by a reduction of £400 per year. On a no win no fee bases, you have nothing to loose.

Money Saving Tip - Rental Income

Wednesday 22nd February 2012 6:48 PM

If you rent out property you may consider using the services of an Estate Agent. There are some merits to using these services.

It is risky to rent out your property (an expensive asset) to the first person who agrees to move in. Putting a sign in the window of the flat/house which you wish to rent out, only attracts those who are passing. This reduces the amount of applicants from which you can choose.

Recently I contacted several Estate Agents to ask about their charges, and what services they would provide. Several were too expensive and a couple just did not instill confidence in me. I choose a company called Onwards and Upwards, who's services included showing around the prospective tenants, credit checking and signing the contracts.

A good agent will give you valuable advice such as the preparation of the property which a House Doctor would call it staging, and vital advice on the legal aspects of renting out property. I was not aware of several statutory requirements needed.

If you are renting out property yourself, remember that Estate Agents fees are tax deductible,,,,,...,,,, why do all the legwork yourself ?

Have you thought about claiming tax relief for your office Christmas Party

Thursday 16th February 2012 2:01 PM

Expenses for which you can claim tax relief can be a little complicated.

It is widely understood that you can not claim tax relief against Entertainment but is the office Christmas Party entertainment ?? No Christmas Parties are classed as a "Qualifying Annual Event" and in recent years the maximum allowance for which you can claim tax relief has increased to £150 per head per year.

Per year means you can include other events such as birthdays, Easter etc

Per head means that partners of employees can have their own "allowance"

You can claim against tax, national insurance and VAT for the employee's element (not the partners)

Criteria is that the party must be open to all employees of that department/location/company.

You must not exceed £150 or you will lose ALL of your allowance

Merry Christmas

Business meeting with Ed Balls

Thursday 12th January 2012 1:37 PM

I attended the meeting with Ed Balls last Friday to discuss what we can do to help local businesses. Most of us feel a little suspicious when politicians call meeting but I have to say this was constructive and well attended.

It has certainly made me think … what can we do ??

The subject will be discussed at the next www.BusinessEnterpriseNetwork.co.uk meeting but if you can't attend, please e-mail me with your ideas. mail@JonesAccountants.co.uk
